I thought Laszlo's summaries were funny:-> "useful", "clever", "useful", "clever", and "no advantage" :p

This was just my opinion, and obviously the voters did not agree. I don’t understand why your code did not get a vote. It works, it is useful and with a trivial modification it is even practical. This is why I asked the voters about their reasons, but nobody bothered. It looks like they valued the number of innovative tricks in the base64 code, not its usefulness out of the box.
