Anyway to record the duration of a key press automatically without needing to add the time in manually? By "automatically" I mean with "AutoScriptWriter (recorder)"?

I don't think so. But depending the reason you need a delay, manually inserting one of the Wait commands, such as WinWait or ClipWait, might make the script faster and more reliable.

So the only way to program a key down for a specific duration is to use the down command and then a wait function with a (manually entered time) and then the up command?

That's right. This is because the down/up method did not exist at the time AutoScriptWriter was conceived. And for 99% of purposes, there is no need to hold a key down when simulating keystrokes (some games might be exceptions).
