Building a house

01 Apr 2016, 12:20

My wife and I are selling our current house and building a new home. I couldn't be more sick to my stomach about it. It's so overwhelming and expensive and lots of decisions and lots of things that can go wrong or fall through. Just sick about it.

My wife and I want to buy a house, and that's more simple than building one, but I'm sick about it as well...

I figured the monthly payments for the loan wouldn't be too bad, but then you add on interest, and then you need insurance for the property and pay taxes, etc... The affordable monthly payment then becomes a much bigger one, and I'm not rich.

haha. I hear ya. The builder wanted $5k earnest money! Who the heck has an extra $5k sitting in their account!? Buying our first house was a cinch. But, selling your home to buy/build a new one... whole different story.

I only know the story from my parents and it is about buying.
I wish you the best luck in your decisions and that they may last for the future.

You're building a house and don't have $5k? What are you building exactly? A matchstick house?

What's wrong with your current house?

Building a house, it's really easy you know, i saw this building show on the TV, they built a really nice house in just a week, super easy.

Sorry i get really sad hearing stories like this, I can see in your writing that this is something you really don't want to do... I have old friends with "convincing" wives making big "decisions together" with them. Long time since I heard from them though, they are extremely busy. Working overtime all the time, and working on their fine houses on their free time.

Helgef, if you aren't in debt and have the smallest house in your circle of friends, you are a poor loser you know. One just go to the little bank, get a little loan.. Be sure you hold the little pen together with that wonderful wife of yours.

Just saying...

Happy building!

So... I guess it wasn't your ideal choice to build a new house? Feel like something so huge should only have your full support.

Hey everyone. I completely forgot about this thread. Here's an update:

We've been living in our new build for about 2 months now, hosted Thanksgiving (~35 people) and currently typing this from my home office! Overall, we love it and are very happy with our decision. There are a few things we still get a little angry about that happened during the build process, but overall happy. The builder was difficult to work with and had terrible communication. If there's anyone building out there, make sure there is a solid line of communication. Otherwise, work moves so fast and it costs more money to fix.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts!

Ha! I didn't see this until now. At that time, no we didn't have 5K because we hadn't sold our house yet and they wanted money up front. The sale of our home was going to (and did) leave us with PLENTY of left over money, but we couldn't access it until our home was sold.
