Joedf it's just you're brain making assumptions. Like the green cylinder, it's meant to be the same green and while you don't see it as such and it clearly isn't the same green your brain is likely able to accept that it is the same green easier than the letters being the same color (if it was reality, and not a picture it would be the same green, but the letters would still look different). The fact is the different background colors are making you're brain perceive the letters as different shades when they are actually the same, it's basically enhancing the letters relative to the background for you so you can see them easier, and one is mentally enhanced more than the other.

The letters themselves are a different colors.

You mean the surrounding colors and implied shadow? Both the 'light' and 'dark' square containing the letters are 0x787878.
