autohotkey.net up for grabs

Buy Autohotkey.net $2,950.00
tank wrote:As many who have been around a while know; in late 2012 our file share autohotkey.net was hacked and we lost nearly everything. You either got to this post by clicking one of those links or browsing our forums. Most are unimpacted. For some looking for some legacy scripts referred to on our archived forum these losses are a grievous. While our servers are all backed up now and much more secure, the losses cannot be recovered
All this is old news why the post?
Until now we had no way to recover the domain. We couldn't have if we tried. There are literally thousands of links in our archived forum that link to autohotkey.net.
We now have a partial backup
Because of this it may be possible to restore links to old scripts from the archived forum.
The archived forum still produced google search results. The malicious content now being delivered by the domain makes us look bad.
If we can get it back I intend to support user uploads to it again as a free storage for AHK users.

If you want it back please donate towards the cost [url=here[/url]. I will remove the donation link once the goal is reached, the domain is purchased, or otherwise unavailable. If the domain is lost to us I will do my best to refund donations over 25 dollars.

I thought you could get it legally without paying that super price?

That's the cost. Not sure what you're referring to

We're refering to how some criminals took that domain and now want to sell it for that price and how the majority of people here wouldn't want to buy it from thieves.
Do we have no legal options here? Do you have some information that we do not have? What is your reasoning behind wanting to buy that domain?

I voted no for not under these conditions.

It isn't being purchased from someone. It is a premium domain cost. No one has it currently

Links go 404, welcome to the internet. I wouldn't even bother restoring links in the archived forum even if it could be done at no cost. And having a user upload feature could also be done on a subdomain of the current .com domain, then again, more developed platform are already available.

Eh? It's maintained by Parkingcrew.com which identifies itself as 'domainparking platform', which seems like a business friendly term for cybersquatting. So It's registered by them or one of their users.

i voted yes without reading. after reading, i want to change my vote to no. if it were cheaper then sure grab it, but i don't like the idea of paying 3k to criminal squatters

the link says:

"Call (480) 505-8877 for buying assistance"

i wonder if we can call and negotiate. saying that you're calling on behalf of our open source Foundation and explain the history and how that price is just way out of our budget

posting again just in case someone might actually read it :-)

https://autohotkey.com/boards/viewtopic ... 88#p203588

Google 'cease and desist letter cybersquatting' will result in nearly copy/paste ready emails you can send to the registrar - worth a shot (just an email) e.g. abuse @ namecheap . com - they have a blog post (ok advertorial more or less) here https://www.namecheap.com/blog/domain-n ... rsquatter/

Umm why do we need it again? it's not like purchasing it will bring back what was lost.
Unless it's question of scaling, a single domain is easier to remember imo.. I vote `we don't need it`.
Edit:
- My statements have nothing to do with archived forums on autohotkey.com
- I'm ok with .com and .org ( although .org should be foundation/wiki related )

Well I guess we should just shutdown the old forums.

I sent an email ticket to NameCheap but haven't heard anything yet. All I know is that the way things are now we are guilty by association of a shared name. Shutting down the archive won't change that or the hundreds of links to its content on 3rd party sites

NameCheap denies anything is wrong and pointed out that the domain is for sale. what more do you all think i can do?

I voted no. Wanted to say yes, but 3k$ is quite costly...

I don't see the right option in the poll. I'd vote for Shoot the thieves in the head and then take back what's ours. But pay the thieves? Hell no!

Domain name flipping/speculation is a whole business onto itself.
Popular expired domain names, names that abbreviate well for big businesses,
and or when new TLDs come online tend to get scooped up by `squatters` that then turn around and charge exorbitant prices for them.
It really can be quite lucrative.

(I'm on a phone & can't type a full reply, but)

Do you own the "AutoHotkey" trademark?...try going thru ICANN's UDRP

Plz don't pay thieves or domain squatters, sue them! I'd much rather pay $3,000 to SUE them, than to buy it FROM them...plus I'd sue for the cost of suing them...

Any lawyers in da house?

I don't think Chris or anybody formally registered a trademark for AHK. Yea we definitely need a lawyer

Change domains. We will follow.
AHKcode.org and AHKcode.net are available cheap.

Well if we'd offer a new service it should point to the main domain.
