similar to the idea of retrieval, is called Spaced Repetition. where you test yourself over time to see if you can retrieve/remember the information. there is software that can keep track of your results, and then re-test you at appropriate intervals. its called Anki and i've uesd it to learn things to good effect
another analogous book that is absolutely fascinating is called Peak where they study examples of top chess players or musicians and how they've learned to master their crafts. the book was so good. remembering it actually makes me want to reread it
