Should A tags get target="_blank" attribute ?

28 Sep 2016, 18:12

Was just wondering if the target="_blank" attribute can be added posts so links open in a new window rather than in the current one.

Presently a tags look like <a href="https://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rf ... #sec19.5.1" class="postlink">the spec</a>
And work like the spec

I could edit the template if others agree ( + I know joe is super busy ;) ) but I'm not sure if auto-backups would overwrite this behavior.

Let me know what you think,
Thanks

Do it i certainly approve that all external links should open new windows/tab

Agreed that external links should be new tabs/windows. It seems a pretty standard practice to dissociate the sites. (Is there a better word than dissociate in this case?)

my browsers (vivaldi, maxthon) have options to: either drag-url to open in a new tab (bg tab or main tab) or a gesture to open in a bg tab.
but accidental misclicks happen

I prefer not to have this. If I want a new tab, I'll ask for one.

This and this. Then again, I already have my browser set up to ignore the target="_blank" attribute, because of sites assuming they know what I want better than I do.

Very true, I have thought of it... didnt bother mentioning it. We are removing the option to choose.
Like I said, I middle click either way.. and there's no "un-middle" click if you know what I mean :p

You know what, good point.
Unless there's some way to add an option for it to UCP

I guess so... I mean greasemonkey/tampermonkey would be a goodway to go.
