ahkscript.org forum seems extremely slow

26 Feb 2014, 15:22

Hello,

Does anyone else find this forum very slow?

When I first began posting questions here rather than on the old site, I noticed a distinct lag when, for example, going from one page to another in a multi-page thread. I just blew it off however, thinking it was something with my local connection or ISP. However since then, I've noticed the same lag each time I come here — and I've bounced back and forth with some other forums on a few occasions to see if they are responding slowly. Everything's always OK though so, at least for me, the ahkscript.org forum is always slow.

Any explanations or suggestions?

Thanks
A ------------------------------ [A LOT OF SPACE] ------------------------------ LOT

"ALOT" is not a word. It never has been a word and it never will be a word.
"A LOT" is 2 words. Remember it as though there's [A LOT OF SPACE] between them.

I have moved this to the appropriate forum and deleted the duplicate.
Welcome to the forum.
I haven't had the kind of time i needed to finish writing my anti spam plugin. and we are hit harder or softer at times. I honestly dont see any lag but i expect it does exist at times.

It's fine at the moment. Just before I read this thread earlier in the day, it was very slow. I was going to say so, but the site stopped responding.

For some stuff, response time is well over a minute for me right now. Not complaining. Just saying.

Same problem here (3-4 times per day)
Response time 10-40 seconds to open a page.

(30-MB exclusive connection and all other sites are fast)

It isn't just you guys we undergo attacks. My time is limited and I spen every free moment devising new customizations to stem the flow.consider we get something like a factor of 6. The attempts of spammers. Only a small portion gets thru. But each attempt takes resources

I don't get it. How do spammers make the forum slow? Are you talking about DOS kind of attacks?
Because I haven't seen any spam in this forum so far. On autohotkey.com this seems to be a way bigger issue.

But I am definitely experiencing the same issues with the loading times. 10-40 seconds for a response seems to be about right.

That's why we have Mods : the spam removing ninjas!
But seriously, I havent noticed any spam on autohotkey.com or ahkscript.org recently, or at least not as many... On the other hand, we have to consider that just loading the homepage a great number of times can slow things down too. Also, What if there is actually somebody that specifically targeting this website, that is constantly changing IP? We should consider having Q&A questions or captchas something... Hmm, I did some browsing and found this : http://www.campaignmonitor.com/blog/pos ... ternatives

P
Some suggest using spam databases, captchas or some simple tips.

I think disabling the guest posting feature would help a lot.
But seriously I haven't seem any spam at all so far. And I have reloaded the page about 2 times per hour for about 5 hours.
And the page was all the time extremely slow. So I don't think that spammers are the problem.
I think the server or the upstream is just too weak.
And phpBB doesn't seem to do a very good job on keeping the traffic low (it barely uses ajax requests instead of completely redirecting)... besides the super low quality gif buttons that would be cached anyway.

Thats because tank added Spam counter measures.
The Spam decreased drastically ever since he did that.

what you guys don't see is the sometimes thousands of http requests per hour. many post requests die quietly because of the enhanced filtering. you also dont see the requests that never even get processed because of the hundreds of ip addresses that get blacklisted. Many of the mods can tell you that we used to have almost twice the volume of spam as legit posts. they just deleted like ninjas. those requests still come in but are filtered so they never actually post anymore

That said we are on one of the cheapest hosting accounts in the world. and there are faster servers. but many of the sites you compare this one to also have mirrors on load balancers. data is retrieved from the server closest to you with the least load. the site has not been slow from my geographical location since i stemmed the flow of spam actually making it through. PM me a city and country where your seeing slowness and i can investigate if that is a factor.

Please understand my time is volunteer. if you have a solution which can be implemented without breaking functionality and guest posting that has some chance at working I am all ears

I've seem some sites using anti DOS/DDOS services like http://www.cloudflare.com/
As far as I understood the service it will force suspicious requests to evaluate a Javascript for 5 seconds to get to the actual site's server.
But I guess you can configure it to do whatever you want.
I don't really know about the pricing, but this poped up when I googled for it: http://www.etechknol.com/cloudflare-cdn ... ce-review/
there seems to be some kind of "free" protection and one that costs $20/month.

If that's what it takes to stop the spamming, I'm voting for it. I also don't see a problem with having some ads on the site to pay for the protection.

edit:
It might be a good idea to apply for Google's "Protect Shield": http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2426053,00.asp

I just reloaded this thread's site before editing my post and it took about 20 seconds. I'm from Kiel, Germany if that's of any help.

I just ip banned something like 150 Ip addresses based on an obvious attack pattern from the apache logs
Please let me know if there is any improvement

Yes, painfully slow. 20+ seconds response or error. This is the error that I have been getting today:

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.
