My IP address has been mistakenly banned

07 May 2014, 11:47

Last night I was able to sign into and post on ahkscript.org just fine. Today I get a message that "your IP address has been banned until May 21 for BOT POSTING". Utter rubbish. Clearly this was accidental, unless somebody has a grudge against me, which I find unlikely.

Right now I'm accessing this site from my cellular data connection instead of my Wi-Fi connection (different IP addresses), so it's not such a big deal for me because I can still access the site if I need to. Hopefully this doesn't happen again for me or anybody else and can be fixed if possible. I recall reading a month or two on autohotkey.com/boards about how somebody else was banned from ahkscript.org/boards for this same reason.

Apparently my IP range is also blocked. Please check 82.137.x.x, it's assigned dynamically to mobile GPRS modems. That's my only means of connecting to the Internet. Luckily there are proxies but...
Thanks!

the IP addresses were picked up from stopforumspam.org on 6/2 why would your IP be on that list?
any way it seems my cron job fouled up and your Ip is no longer in the stopforumspam list. I fixed the cron job and updated the htaccess
Try again and let me know the result

The situation persisted for a few days, can't say exactly for how long. Knowing what you're dealing with I just let it be, but then thought I might as well let you know about it, just in case.
Right now it works, connected directly at first attempt.

Personally I don't trust much these data-gathering places, misinformation may lead to such unwanted issues. But compromise cannot be avoided, I guess.

All's well when it ends well, right? ;) Thank you! :)

Didn't want to sound pushy, considering we just had that previous filtering issue and all. Glitches happen.

Talking about glitches, just had a similar one before. Clicking on the link in the e-mail notification I was sent to a 404 page. The actual address in the address bar was strange compared to the visible address in the e-mail. Thought the IP was blocked again. But performing a copy/paste of the address from e-mail to browser took me to the right page. Could be an error in the script that sends the notifications? I've been using for months POP Peeper 4.0 beta for e-mails and so far had no issues with other links (from WordPress blogs, for example).

ahkerror800.jpg
address mismatch

(had to resize the screenshot since 1024x768 is not accepted; funny thing is a PNG that size was ~49kB while this JPG at 800x600 and 86% quality is larger)

UPDATE: clicked the mail link again and it took me to the right page this time. The only difference is I was already logged in. Maybe the redirector is at fault, when one is not already logged in and tries to access a specific reply in a topic.

I just had someone end up on a list from stopforumspam.org. The server updates the list from them daily.

In addition JoeDF and TLM can look at that list and manually edit it if need be but if your on it then you should definately go to stopforumspam.org and request you be removed

For now things seem to work somehow correctly. Clicking on a mail link takes me to the login page and after entering the credentials it takes me to the right topic/comment. If anything, It's a little unclear why would the forum software require login if one would simply want to read the respective post/comment. If a reply were required, the user could subsequently log in, otherwise they would just leave the page. I find it superfluous to log in and out only to read a comment or two.

Other forum software send the complete comment in the mail notification message, so the recipient can read the contents and then decide whether a reply is in order or not, thus avoiding the log in + read + log out sequence. Personally I got used to that system for a very long time.

Anyway, this is just feedback, hopefully useful. ;)

I have in fact entertained the idea of modding to sent the message as part of the email

let me see if i can try and explain the logon requirement.
you may notice a parameter in the string e=somenumber
this is how the forum software tracks read verses not read. Most users who allow cookies to persist and do not use logout never notice this. you could very easily remove the last parameter in that URI and visit the page without logon and skip the read vs not read indicator

With all the hype about privacy, NSA and all that, I believe most users - at least those aware of what they're doing - are clearing cookies, history, temporary files and whatnot on each possible occasion. Personally I set Firefox to clear cookies on exit and I've also an add-on button to clear the cache. As such, every visit to this site (or any other, for that matter) is subject to relogging in.

As far as I know, each reply has a unique ID so the software could direct the user to that precise reply even without the user being logged in. If it depended on the page number plus the count of replies on the last page, then I'd understand the log in requirement, since the user may change in theor control panel (at least in certain forum software) the number of replies on each page. But when the reply ID is used and it does not depend on such calculations, there should be no such restrictions, IMHO.

Regarding your directions above, while useful, they would be hard to understand/follow for certain users. HTML-aware mail readers would open the link on any accidental click while trying to copy part of the link. Might get frustrating for some people.

I hope all this comes out as a technical discussion with all the best intentions.

Me too
Both this and the forum at autohotkey.com do not use encryption. so like it or not everything you do in either place is open to the world. I highly doubt your cookies and cache will be the central resource for information gathering .... all that said it has been recently verified that the NSA has convinced the industry to use ecryption standards that they had exploits too. so by all means delete your cache but its pointless. They can just capture your data from your ISP

Yes, they can do whatever they want, they can get to whoever they want. I know all of this.

Reason why I clear cookies, temporary files and all that is mainly to prevent clutter (I've had computers for repair which had gigabytes of temporary files, including virii hiding in there), not that I have anything to hide. None of my computers use any antivirus or firewalls (except for the built-in one, in XP, but the 9x system doesn't care about any of these).

The tor network has been penetrated long ago by the FBI and they "poisoned" it, gaining access to all the traffic. Personally I don't like being considered a criminal by default. If the current way of the world were changed for the better it would be much easier to keep track of really bad people, allowing the others to express themselves freely. But that's utopia, they say... Well, I still believe people can be good, if they get the chance to live really free and they get a sane education first of all. But that's so much off-topic here.

Going back to this forum: being on a page, no matter which, not logged in and then logging in from the top-left link option, it will take the user to the main forum page and not back to the page they were already viewing. I believe the user should be taken back the same page they were before logging in - maybe they wanted to reply to that topic or something. Wouldn't you agree?
