if else maximum size?

I have a long macro that uses many if...else.... statements. I add additional if... else... to it from time to time and it has worked great until recently. Now it will work sometimes and sometimes it just sits there for a few seconds and then disappears from the computer. I think it might be related to the length of the macro because if I delete some of the if.... else... lines it starts working until I add a few more lines. Is there some kind of limit to how long if...else... combinations can be?

example - if.....
else....
if....
else....
etc.
