Does the activeX control work in the latest version of Windows?

I made the awful, horrible mistake of letting Windows update and I have spent most of the day fixing things that used to work fine but don't anymore. One of those things is a gui with an activex control that let me view the webcam on my 3d printer from this computer. Now whenever I open it I get a message saying "Navigation to the webpage was canceled". The webcam is still broadcasting, no problem watching it in a browser.
So I have two questions...

1. Has anyone else experienced problems with activex controls with the latest windows updates?

2. Is it really safe to use activex controls anyway?

I'm running Win10 home 64 on both computers and even tried with the firewalls turned off.

Well, activex started working again on it's own. I guess it wasn't enough restarting the computer a dozen times, had to leave it off and let it set for several hours as well. Wish the other things the update broke would start working again on their own as well.

This still leaves the question, as vulnerable as activex is, is it safe to use activex controls?
