advice for speeding up a very slow PC

@ garry: I usually open the Services panel and disable things there. But one should be very knowledgeable about what to disable and what not, otherwise the system may become inoperable. And Win7 has many many more services than XP. Unfortunately I can't remember what exactly I tinkered with, it was years ago when I first installed a test Win7 system and needed it to connect to the 98SE machine over the LAN. All I remember is that it was extremely sluggish and disabling Windows Defender speeded it up. Notice it's called Windows defender, not User or Data or Computer defender.
